About Xeomin
Xeomin is a purified strain of botulinum toxin type A that, similar to BOTOX, is injected into certain facial muscles to soften the appearance of dynamic wrinkles. Dynamic wrinkles, as opposed to static wrinkles, are the result of repetitive facial expressions, like frowning, laughing, and squinting. After the course of many years, the muscles used for these expressions stay slightly contracted, which creates lines that stay visible even when you relax your face. Xeomin fully relaxes these muscles so the skin can appear smooth. Pacific Skin and Cosmetic Dermatology San Francisco & Marin is proud to offer many cosmetic and medical dermatology services, including Xeomin nonsurgical wrinkle relaxer treatments. If you would like to learn more about Xeomin, schedule a consultation with our board-certified dermatologist, Tracy Evans.
Reviews
Ideal Candidates
Xeomin is very similar to both BOTOX and Dysport in that it works to relax certain facial muscles to soften dynamic wrinkles. It can be used to address dynamic lines on the forehead, between the brows, and around the eyes, though it is very important that your injections are performed by a professional for these delicate areas.
The main difference between Xeomin and the other wrinkle relaxers on the market is that Xeomin does not contain any additives — it is pure type A botulinum toxin. This can be beneficial for patients who have used BOTOX or Dysport long-term and have developed antibodies to the additives they contain. If you are interested in having a wrinkle relaxer treatment, it is important to discuss your past treatments, your medical history, and your current medications with Dr. Evans at your consultation.
Procedure Technique
At Pacific Skin and Cosmetic Dermatology San Francisco & Marin, we perform our Xeomin injections as an outpatient treatment at our San Francisco and Corte Madera offices. Most patients do not need any topical or local anesthesia as the treatment moves very quickly and is usually not uncomfortable. First, the areas of your face we are treating will be cleaned, and then your Xeomin injections will be performed with a fine-gauge needle. The whole process should not take a full half hour, and then we will apply pressure and cold compresses for a few minutes before you leave. This helps to stop any minor bleeding and reduce swelling or bruising.
What to Expect
You can leave our office immediately after your Xeomin treatment to resume your normal routine, but exercise and other strenuous activities should be avoided for at least 24 hours. You will need to sleep with your head elevated and use cold compresses periodically to speed healing and results. For a few days after a Xeomin injection, you may have some redness, swelling, and bruising at the injection sites, but this should heal on its own, and you can cover it with cosmetics if you want. The results with Xeomin are usually visible after four days and can last up to three months. Dr. Evans or one of her professional team members will talk to you about scheduling any maintenance injections at Pacific Skin and Cosmetic Dermatology San Francisco & Marin.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does Xeomin cost?
The cost of your Xeomin treatment will depend on the number of injections needed to address your unique concerns. During your initial consultation, we will discuss your cosmetic goals so your treatment plan can be created. Then your cost can be estimated. Pacific Skin and Cosmetic Dermatology San Francisco accepts many forms of payment and frequently has specials on injectable treatments, like Xeomin.
Is Xeomin or BOTOX better for me?
Both Xeomin and BOTOX are injectable wrinkle relaxers made with a purified strain of botulinum toxin. Dr. Evans and the professional team at Pacific Skin and Cosmetic Dermatology San Francisco understand the subtle differences between Xeomin and other wrinkle relaxers so they can determine which is better for each patient. During your initial consultation, we will help you decide if Xeomin or BOTOX is right for your goals.
What's the difference between Xeomin and fillers?
Xeomin is a wrinkle relaxer that improves the appearance of dynamic facial wrinkles, especially the frown lines between your eyebrows (glabellar lines). A wrinkle filler addresses static wrinkles and restores volume. Be sure to tell Dr. Evans your specific concerns and goals so she can determine if you should get Xeomin, a dermal filler, or a combination of both.
Does Xeomin have side effects?
Xeomin is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a cosmetic wrinkle treatment and can be safely used on most patients. During your initial consultation, we will ask several questions, including any known allergies and all medications, herbs, and supplements you are currently taking. You should be open and honest to avoid any complications or side effects.
How often should I get Xeomin injections?
Improvements from a Xeomin treatment can last up to three months. Each patient will metabolize the injection at a different rate, which will determine how long his or her results last. During your initial consultation, we will discuss how often you should schedule appointments to touch-up your results.
