Dermaplaning is a skin resurfacing procedure that the medical professional team at Pacific Skin in Marin & San Francisco, use to give the skin a smoother appearance. Because continuous exposure of the top layer of skin to UV rays, environmental toxins, and irritants means that it may begin to appear dull, dermaplaning aims to refresh the skin by removing the top layer.
Using a scalpel-type blade to remove skin cells, hair, and other debris that may be present on the surface of the skin, dermaplaning can help with acne scars, dry skin, sun-damaged skin, and small wrinkles. Once the top layer of skin is removed the newer skin cells are exposed to make your skin appear smoother and glowing!

"The staff here is beyond exceptional. One of the best Dr appts I’ve had. Clarence, her PA is wonderful & the front desk staff has the competent and cheery disposition of unjaded youth. I’ll update my review after getting the MOHS surgery removal to compare work & costs to my previous doctor but so far, exceptional experience!"- S.P. / Yelp / Aug 09, 2023
"I recently read a couple of misguided reviews of Dr. Tracy Evans. I have been treated in many of the finest dermatology clinics and in private practices across the West Coast. In my experience, Tracy Evans and her staff of highly trained doctors and nurses, are not just among the best, but are hands down, THE best I have ever seen. Dr Evans is a highly skilled surgeon for Moh's surgery, which she has performed on me dozens of times. Before I met Dr. Evans, I was overwhelmed with increasing numbers of skin cancers. I came to Precision Dermatology utterly discouraged from fighting skin cancer for over 2 decades with no good end in site I felt hopeless, from Dr.s giving up or telling me I couldn't be cured. Dr. Evans gave me hope again. She promised me, she wouldn't give up on me. I now know that I owe my life to her and her amazing staff. If you are looking for the best, and you're lucky enough to become her patient, you need look no further. Thank you Dr Evans!"- M.D. / Google / Jul 15, 2023
Dermaplaning is a safe procedure that requires very little preparation. Prior to the procedure, we will use a gentle cleanser with alpha or beta hydroxy acids to help loosen dead skin cells. Once the face is completely dry, we will use a sterilized 10-gauge scalpel to begin the removal process. The actual removal process entails slightly pulling the skin tawt and using the blade to make short motions against the grain of the hair on the skin. The process usually takes about 45 minutes to complete. Following the procedure, we will apply a moisturizer to the skin before providing a post-procedure care guide. There is no downtime needed post dermaplaning appointment. No need to take time off work, oftentimes we can schedule the session during a lunch break!
The ideal candidates for dermaplaning are looking to achieve a more youthful look by removing dead skin, small hairs, and minor imperfections in their complexion. Some potential benefits include:
- reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, acne scarring, or sun-damaged skin
- restoring a youthful glow to the skin
- removing small hairs that can hold onto oil and debris
The effectiveness of dermaplaning depends largely on your skin type, daily skin routines, and appointment cadence. For continued desired results, dermaplaning should be completed on a consistent schedule. Our office staff at both Marin and San Francisco offices can schedule your appointments in advance to assure a proper maintenance schedule is in place.
